How to Read an IGI Lab-Grown Diamond Report

Connect the reported details to the diamond you are considering, then review the stone and purchase terms separately.

Read the Actual Report

Keep the report number, stone measurements and corresponding photographs together when comparing a proposed stone.

What an IGI Report Tells You

Start with the document type and the stone description. Read the actual report supplied for your selected diamond; fields vary by report and assessment scope.

Laboratory-Grown Origin

Check that the description identifies a laboratory-grown diamond. A diamond photograph alone cannot establish its origin. IGI screens gemstones to distinguish natural, laboratory-grown and simulant material.

Report Number

Use the identifier printed on the document when checking the laboratory record. Keep that number with the selected stone’s quotation and media so the discussion stays tied to one candidate.

Shape & Measurements

Read shape and cutting style alongside length, width and depth. Measurements help assess setting fit and compare the outlines of stones with similar carat weights.

Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut

Compare the grades recorded for that stone. Check which cut assessment, polish and symmetry fields are present; do not assume every shape or report uses identical fields. View the actual stone as well as its documented grades.

Growth Method and Report Comments

CVD and HPHT describe growth methods. Read the report comments for any growth or treatment information stated. IGI says growth process and treatment information can be noted on request; do not infer missing details from a photograph.

Laser Inscription

Where present, compare the girdle inscription with the report number. IGI offers laser inscription to support identification. Ask whether an inscription image is available for the selected stone; do not assume every proposed diamond has one.

How to Verify a Report

Open IGI’s official verification service and enter the supplied report number. Compare the returned record with the document and proposed specifications. If information differs, resolve the discrepancy before selecting the stone.

What a Report Does Not Tell You

A report does not establish today’s stock status, price, mounting quality or future servicing terms. Confirm those with your proposal. Laboratory systems also differ: GIA’s current quality assessment for eligible colorless-to-near-colorless laboratory-grown diamonds uses Premium or Standard. Read each laboratory’s document on its own terms.
